Fr. David Muenchrath is the new Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Des Moines, taking over for Fr. Chis Fontanini. Fr. Muenchrath was on the show to talk about his new position. He said that he is taking a team approach, along with Jason Kurth, Darlene Oliver, and Bishop Pates. Fr. Muenchrath talked about his duties of promoting vocations and recruting young men into vocations.
There is a Prayer and Discernment group being held by the priests of Dowling Catholic High School for all those young high school men seeking God's will. Jill Stanek, a weekly columnist for WorldNetDaily.com, and active member in the pro-life community, was on to talk about her work in helping to pass the Born Alive Protection Act. Jill had worked as a registerd nurse at Christ Hospital in Chicago, where born alive abortions were being performed, and the babies were being left to die in an old utility closet. Jill protested privately, but the hospital continued with the abortions, so she took to the national stage, and has appeared on many tv and radio shows, and been quoted in many national newspapers. She has also testified twice before the Judiciary Constituion Subcommitee of the US House of Representatives. Jill recieved the Life Prizes Award by the Gerard Foundation in January. Jeanne Shupe was our featured local guest with her Recipe of the month for August. Her recipe today was for Poutine. To make Poutine, French fries are sprinkled with cheese curds, and topped with Chicken gravy, and dashed with salt and pepper.
An alternative version, Jeanne's "Breakfast Poutine," substitues hash browns for the fries, and sausage gravy for chicken gravy.


Bob Rice, Associate Professor of Catechetics at Franciscan University of Steubenville, and a featured speaker at this year's KWKY Fatih Matters Conference came on the show to promote the conference. He will be emceeing the event, will be giving a keynote speech and main talks, and will be performing some of the music. Bob will be talking about why the Catholic Faith is so important in our lives, and the Faith Matter Conference is a great way to refresh and renew yourself in the Catholic Faith. The Faith Matters Conference is this weekend, August 28 and 29th at the Polk County Convention Center in downtown Des Moines. Steve Abdalla is the founder, along with his wife Joni, of "Wee Believers", a Catholic toy company. They sell Catholic toys, which help to educate kids as well as enrich their faith. James Becker, a native of Des Moines, and a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School, is a member of Focus, a group based out of Denver that goes out onto college campuses and encourages students to incorporate the Catholic Faith into their college lives. The students are challenged to take on and live out the Catholic Faith in all that they do. Focus is currently on 45 college campuses throughout the country. Brian English, from the Iowa Family Policy Center was the first guest. He discussed the current health care reform, and what the IFPC is doing to fight it, especially in preventing the possibility of federally funded abortions.




Al Kresta was the featured national guest this morning from the Iowa State Fair. Al has broadcast his nationally syndicated show this week from KWKY's booth at the Fair. He talked with Bill and Rich about his return to the Catholic Church and his entrance into radio, and creation of Ave Maria Radio. They also discussed topics from Al's show, such as the current health care legislation, and trying to keep abortion out of it, as well as other topics such as Harvey Milk posthumously recieving the Presidential Medal of Freedom last week.

Lila Rose, president of Live Action, was the second guest for the day. She spoke about creating Live Action, and the impact it is having on the world, spreading the truth about abortion and Planned Parenthood.
Lila is a student activist at UCLA. Live Action is a student led organization spreading awareness via new media about truths in the abortion industry. Live Action conducts undercover investigations of the abortion industry and releases the findings to the public through traditional and independent media outlets, such as FOX News and YouTube.
Lila founded Live Action when she was 15, and has since launched several successful undercover investigations exposing racism and statutory rape cover-up at Planned Parenthood.

Bob talked about what a joy it is to see high school and college age kids coming to the camp and volunteering he then added what a bright future the church has with kids like this being so dedicated to faith.

He wanted listeners to know that there is always something exciting to do while on a cruise. Talia Leman, CEO of RandomKid, was the Local Guest of the day. Talia is a Waukee native and only 14 years old. When Talia was 10 years old she saw the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and wanted to do something about it. She organized a group that collected on Halloween night. that national group raised over 10 million dollars for relief. Talia has be recognized by 3 presidents and will carry the torch for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Brian Kissinger, Youth Minister in DC Area, was Bill and Sherill's First guest of the day. Brian discussed the importance of finding ways to get children involved in the Ministry. Brian just got back from a camping trip with the youth. They participated in many great activities such as high rope, riding a zip line and enjoying the pool. The week was set up so there was one adult to ever 5 kids. There was also 150 youth that attended. For individuals to return to camp next year they have to bring a friend who hasn't previously attended the event.



Chris Stefanick, author of Do I Have to Go?, was the second guest of the day. Chris' biography is an impressive one. "Chris has served at parishes in the East Los Angeles area and in Pennsylvania, and as the Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry for La Crosse, WI. He is currently the Director of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver." He worked on this book because he wanted the youth to see why they are participating in in the mass.

Tyler Price, with Martyrs of the Third Millennium, joined Bill and Rich in the studio as the first guest of the day. Martyrs of the Third Millennium is a group of young adults that wants to continue in their Faith. "An evening for young adults in the Des Moines Diocese to come together in worship and adoration of our Lord. The evening includes prayer, music, speakers relevant for our age group and the liturgical season." The group invites young adults from 18 and older to attend their next night which will be August 23rd at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale.Sandy Hatfield Clubb Athletic Director for Drake University will be the speaker of the night.

Bishop Pates, joined Bill and Rich as the second guest of the day. Bishop Pates brought the always hungry Bill and Rich a cherry pie which was the answer to their prayers. The Bishop will be the key speaker at the Faith Matters Conference on the 29th. He will also be celebrating Mass at the end of the conference. Bill and Rich also asked the Bishop about the show he hosts on Friday mornings. The Bishop's show also gets broadcast in Omaha through KVSS.

Kristie Arlt, Director of Communications and Stewardship for the Sioux City Diocese, was the first guest of the day.
Kristie was excited to tell Bill and Rich that the diocese was starting the fund raising programs for schools in the diocese. Kristie also said that the diocese's newspaper The Globe will switching to a bi weekly publication. Kristie also updated us on the status of St. Joseph's which caught on fire in July. There are many people hoping that the 117 year old church gets rebuilt. In the mean time the parishioners have a mass time at a neighboring church.

Michael Voris, who will be a speaker at the Faith Matters Conference, was Bill and Rich's final guest of the day. Michael was sharing with Bill and Rich his excitement to be speaking at the Faith Matters Conference. He thinks that large gatherings of people like this are important. It is a chance for people to see many different points of view and it is a good opportunity for them to make a stronger connection. It provides a good reinforcement to ones faith to be in the same location surrounded by other believers. Michael finished up the interview by commenting that the Faith Matters Conference is a Catholic sporting event and he hopes people have that excitement when they come.

Tom Chapman, Iowa Catholic Conference, was Bill and Rich's first guest of the day. Tom talked about the Iowa Catholic Conference's stance on the new health care bill. The Iowa Catholic Conference believes that there needs to be some sort of health care reform, but not as long as there is a chance that abortion could become more available. The Iowa Catholic Conference is trying to get the message out that the Bishop's wanted to get spread. Tom said that the most effective way for someone to make a difference to their representatives was to visit call or email.

Bob Vander Plaats, author of Light from Lucas, was the second guest of the day. Bob was on the phone while vacationing with his wife and 4 boys. He told the story of his son Lucas and the struggles and life changing events he had in his life. When Lucas was born he was put on a helicopter to be airlifted to a bigger hospital. The doctor told him that babies with issues don't belong in rural hospitals. Lucas wasn't supposed to live longer than a few weeks but he is now 16 years old. Bob commented on the new health care bill and that abortion was never an option for him and his wife. He said that Lucas was a blessing to the family.

Joan Anderson, author of several books about angels, was the second guest of the day. After an experience involving her son being rescued by unexplained events, the interest of Angels was there. She than began talking with people and listening to their stories and writing them down. With angels being mentioned in the Bible over 300 times why wouldn't there be angels around now.

Today's show took place on location at the Dowling Catholic High School 31st Annual Golf Outing at Echo Valley Country Club. The rain stopped just in time for the event to begin on time. 43% of Dowling Catholic students received some amount of tuition assistance
for the ’08-’09 school year. The Golf outing was started by Ed and Joann Coppola to help raise money to aid students that were in need of tuition assistance.
