Immaculee was Bill and Rich's second guest of the day and her story is one that will stay with all of us for a long time. "Immaculée's life was transformed dramatically during the 1994 Rwandan genocide where she and seven other women spent 91 days huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor's house. Immaculée entered the bathroom a vibrant, 115-pound university student with a loving family—she emerged weighing just 65 pounds to find her entire family had been brutally murdered (with the exception of one brother who had been studying out of the country) . . . Immaculée found solace and peace in prayer and began to pray from the time she opened her eyes in the morning to the time she closed her eyes at night. Through prayer, she eventually found it possible, and in fact imperative, to forgive her tormentors and her family's murderers"

The Phoenix House Domestic Violence Shelter & Sexual Abuse Program provides domestic violence and sexual abuse services to anyone faced with these issues through a 24-hour emergency shelter and crisis phone line, court advocacy, educational groups and through outreach to undeserved populations. The shelter provides safe, confidential living for up to eight families at a time. A large outdoor playground and an indoor playroom allow children a place where they can be kids, away from the fear of violence in their home. There are many events planned for October which is Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Lois Burkhart, Divine Treasures, was the second guest on Bill and Rich in the morning. She was discussing the book "The Fulfillment of All Desire". Richard Lane, Catholic Evangelist, was Bill and Rich's second guest of the day. Richard shared stories of the recent events that he had participated in. Richard then told his journey to the Catholic faith. Growing up in Detroit, Richard was raised as a Lutheran. During his teen years he found trouble going to church every week but his mother said you have to go to a church. He ended up going with his friend to a baptist church. During his time in the Army Richard began attending the Catholic services and began to realize his calling to the Catholic Church. Richard now goes around being an Evangelist preaching the good news.

Jill Stanek, a weekly columnist for WorldNetDaily.com, and active member in the pro-life community, was on to talk about her work in helping to pass the Born Alive Protection Act. Brian Kissinger, Youth Minister in DC Area, was Bill and Sherill's First guest of the day. Brian discussed the importance of finding ways to get children involved in the Ministry. Brian just got back from a camping trip with the youth. They participated in many great activities such as high rope, riding a zip line and enjoying the pool. The week was set up so there was one adult to ever 5 kids. There was also 150 youth that attended. For individuals to return to camp next year they have to bring a friend who hasn't previously attended the event.

Chris Stefanick, author of Do I Have to Go?, was the second guest of the day. Chris' biography is an impressive one. "Chris has served at parishes in the East Los Angeles area and in Pennsylvania, and as the Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry for La Crosse, WI. He is currently the Director of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver." He worked on this book because he wanted the youth to see why they are participating in in the mass.

Kristie was excited to tell Bill and Rich that the diocese was starting the fund raising programs for schools in the diocese. Kristie also said that the diocese's newspaper The Globe will switching to a bi weekly publication. Kristie also updated us on the status of St. Joseph's which caught on fire in July. There are many people hoping that the 117 year old church gets rebuilt. In the mean time the parishioners have a mass time at a neighboring church.

Bob Vander Plaats, author of Light from Lucas, was the second guest of the day. Bob was on the phone while vacationing with his wife and 4 boys. He told the story of his son Lucas and the struggles and life changing events he had in his life. When Lucas was born he was put on a helicopter to be airlifted to a bigger hospital. The doctor told him that babies with issues don't belong in rural hospitals. Lucas wasn't supposed to live longer than a few weeks but he is now 16 years old. Bob commented on the new health care bill and that abortion was never an option for him and his wife. He said that Lucas was a blessing to the family.

for the ’08-’09 school year. The Golf outing was started by Ed and Joann Coppola to help raise money to aid students that were in need of tuition assistance.

Steve Gardner form the Gardner Family Foundation joined Bill and Rich with a very enlightening story. Three of his four children suffer from Eosinophilic Gastro Intestinal Disease, also known as EOS. Our white blood cells host something called Eosinophils, which aid the body in fighting off disease and bacteria. In his boys the Eosinophils attack food. His boys are on special diets and his son Josh gets his nutrition from a feeding tube. Steve was excited to share that Josh is in the 50th percentile for his weight and when he is out on the playground you would never be able to know that he has the disease until he lifts his shirt up to show you his feeding tube.

Bacon Wrapped Yummies

1/2 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese (plus a little extra for dusting on top)
1 sleeve of Town house crackers (or any buttery cracker, oval shapes are best)
1 lb sliced bacon, cut in half (so you have 1/2 length slices)
Penzeys Spices Northwoods Fire Seasoning (you'll be using just a pinch on each cracker, so amount is to taste)

Preheat oven with rack positioned in mid-oven to 350 degrees.

Place 1 teaspoon of Parmesan cheese on each cracker.
Put a scant pinch of the Northwoods Fire Seasoning on top of the cheese.
Wrap the crackers in one half slice a bacon, being sure to wrap securely, but not too tight (otherwise, you get a butterfly shaped appetizer which is perfectly fine, but not necessarily what you might want with a he-man bowl of chili!)
Place the crackers on a broiler pan, which has been place on top a slightly larger baking sheet (important when considering any possible bacon grease that may cook away to under the broiler pan)

Dust the tops of the appetizers with a smidgen of extra cheese.
Bake the appetizers for 40 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from broiler/baking sheet rig and let cool on paper towels
Can be served hot or room temperature.

Katrina Zeno, Women of the 3rd Millennium, was the final guest of the day. Bill was excited to talk to someone from Arizona but then realized that it was only 5:30 in the morning. Women of the 3rd Millennium focuses on dignity, vocation, and mission of women and men through retreats, talks, articles, and books. The group focuses on the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and theology of the body from John Paul II.

Last year FOCUS was at 39 campuses and is excited to say that this year they will be at 49 campuses including Drake University in Des Moines.

Richard then told his journey to the Catholic faith. Growing up in Detroit, Richard was raised as a Lutheran. During his teen years he found trouble going to church every week but his mother said you have to go to a church. He ended up going with his friend to a baptist church. During his time in the Army Richard began attending the Catholic services and began to realize his calling to the Catholic Church. Richard now goes around being an Evangelist preaching the good news.

Father Pavone commented the abortion is born out of despair and out of the despair is leading to the expansion of abortion. Dr. Greg McKernan, Family Practitioner and prescribes only Natural Family Planing was Bill and Rich's second guest of the day. The Doctor discussed how the birth control actually causes abortions. He did a lot of extensive research about the subject a realized that if he wanted to follow the church he could not prescribe the birth control pill. Instead he is trying to convince people to use natural family thinking in that they only have intercourse when the women is not fertile or they wait until they are ready to have a child. Dr. Greg left with these words "a baby is not a mistake"

Jerel Merical, who has made 9 mission trips to El Salvador, was Bill and Rich's final guest of the day. Jerel told Bill and Rich about the mission trips that he goes on with St. Boniface. The thing he was excited about was that the community decides what they need help with once the group gets there. Jerel explained the water barrels that they previously taken down there. He also said that financial support is appreciated as well and for $50 a year you can pay for a child to go to school for the entire year.

Steven discussed the film The Stoning of Soraya M, Steven enjoyed this film however he would have liked to see it in a more rounded expression. He reccomended that this film be viewed by more mature audiences due to it's violent moments. He also had some reccomendations on movies that just came out on Blue Ray. Miracle and the Greatest Game ever played were good movies to watch. He also suggested The 7th Seal is one that appears on the Vatican Film List.

Father John Riccardo, host of Christ is the Anwser on Ave Maria, was Bill and Rich's 3rd guest. Father John discussed his journey through his Faith walk. He had all of these things planned out but God had a different plan for him and it all turned around when he read Matthew 19. When Father John was on his search through his life he realized that he didn't want to just hear someone talk he actually wanted to come away with something. Father John wished that the listeners would live with this idea in their minds, that you will let God exploit you.

The idea came to her while she was on a run helping us remember that the Holy Spirit can appear at anytime. Christians in the Middle East. That Christians in the Middle East may live their faith in complete freedom and become instruments of reconciliation and peace.

Humanity Reconciled. Through the witness of the faithful, may the Church be the seed and soil of a humanity reconciled to be God's one true family on earth.

Ross Parker, seminarian going Rome to study, joined Bill and Rich this morning. Ross told Bill and Rich about his journey through his life and how he realized the call that was being presented to him. Originally from Indianola, Ross went to Simpson for his college education and then became a football coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport. During that time he began to feel the call and decided that it was the time for him to go to seminary. He has completed 2 of his 6 years of seminary, but now has an amazing opportunity to travel to Rome to study for the next 4 to 5 years. After spending 2 years studying he will be able to come home to visit. Before the interview was over he assured Bill and Rich that he was brushing up on his Italian.

The newly Ordained Father shared his story about his journey through discernment and seminary. Although he was having a very successful life Father Halbur wasn't happy. He then began to start praying again and the idea of priesthood came into his mind. He then continued on with his work but the idea of priesthood never went away. After losing his job he realized that he was being called to seminary. One thing that was obvious was that people never know when God is going to call them. Before the interview was over Father Halbur blessed the station and it's listeners.

Shawn Carney, for Coalition for Life and Co- Founder for 40 days for Life, was the second guest of the day. Shawn discussed that people have to go to where the problem is to end abortion. Coalition for Life observes peaceful vigils for the end of abortion, and believes praying and talking with people who are considering abortion. He also shared success stories about women who were going to get an abortion but at the last second with the help of coalition for life changed their minds and choose to give birth to the child. He also talked about 40 days for Life which is a program that observes peaceful vigils, fasting, and prayer.

This month Jeanne wanted to help us celebrate the 4th of July in style with her own creation of Flag Jello. The delicious creation consisting of strawberries, marshmallows and blue berries, didn't last long once it was set in front of Bill and Rich. Jeanne also hinted that her vegetable garden was coming along nicely possibly hinting at the next recipe she will be presenting to our listeners.

Flag Jello

Items Needed
7 x 11 pan
1 box strawberry jello
1 box blue raspberry jello
1 cup sliced strawberries
1 cup blueberries
1 bag mini marshmallows

Put sliced strawberries in bottom of 7x11 pan
Follow directions for strawberry jello on box and pour over strawberries.
Chill until solid
Follow directions to melt marshmallows on bag.
Drizzle and spread over strawberry jello
Chill until solid
Spread blueberries over marshmallow layer
Follow directions for blue raspberry jello on box and pour over blueberries.
Chill until solid
Serve and enjoy!

Bob Perron, Executive Director of the St. Thomas More Center, was the second guest of the day. Bob talked about the excitement that he gets from working with the kids and being there for the life changing moments in their lives. This summers theme for camp is "Get Fun" when bringing the kids into camp the counselors tell them to get fun, and by the end of the week the kids are not only saying it but they are truly having fun. Bob talked about what a joy it is to see high school and college age kids coming to the camp and volunteering he then added what a bright future the church has with kids like this being so dedicated to faith.

Joe Cunningham, President and Founder of the Society of St. Gianna Molla, joined Bill and Rich as their national guest. Gianna Molla, born in 1922, is quickly becoming a patroness of marriage. Married in September of 1955 to Pietro Molla, St. Gianna and her husband had four children. During her fourth pregnancy Gianna was diagnosed with uterine tumors. Her doctors advised that she have a surgical abortion to save her own life. Unable to justify taking the life of her child for her own sake Gianna carried her baby to term. She gave birth to Gianna Emanuela on April 21, 1962 and died seven days later at age 39. Her ultimate sacrifice of self in heroic virtue caused her to become the first women doctor to be canonized.

At the end of the month Father Chris is going to be moving on from his position as Vocations Director. With Bill and Rich he spoke about his future plans. For the summer he will be spending time with St. Catherine of Siena Parish. Then in the fall he will be full-time at Dowling until the end of December. In the Spring he will be going on sabbatical where he hopes to spend some time in Rome with the North American Seminary, and go on an eight day retreat.

Dr. Don Martin, author of the book "Road Map For Graduate Study," joined Bill and Rich for second interview. In his book Dr. Martin discusses things to look for when selecting a graduate school and myths associated with continuing on with one's education. The myths that he focused on for the show were:

Affordability
Need to be a rocket scientist
Need to go to top ranked school for it to be worthwhile
For those who are starting grad school later in life they believe that they are too old

The main thing Dr. Martin wanted his readers to keep in mind when considering a graduate school was to take time researching because it is all about you and your education.

Jeanne Shupe, the Volunteer Coordinator for KWKY Radio shared the Monthly Recipe with Bill and Rich for their first interview. The Recipe is for Gram's Barbecue Sauce and will be posted on the sidebar. She will also be sharing with us a 4th of July Jello next week.

Gram's BBQ Sauce

2 cups ketchup
2 tspns liquid smoke
2 tspns onion powder
1 tspn garlic powder
1-1 1/2 cups brown sugar to taste

Mix all together and heat on low.
Use to baste or smother chicken, pork or ribs.

Jeanne also encouraged listeners to help KWKY staff its upcoming events. The first will be KWKY's State Fair Booth August 13-23. Jeanne is still in need of volunteers for the evening slots from 5-9pm as well as some afternoon times. The booth is located outside of the Bill Riley Stage. Anyone working 4 hours or more receives a free ticket into the fair. Tickets will be picked up through a luncheon with the volunteers.

Dale Ahlquist, President of the American Chesteron Society, joined Bill and Rich for their second interview. Dale explained that the American Cherston Society is working towards a revival of interest in the works of G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton was a early 20th Century author from England who traveled several times to America. His writing is prolific and diverse. He wrote about anything from fiction, poetry, plays, history, philosphy, thelogy, economy, and politics. He truly was a complete thinker, which makes him a great appologist for the Catholic Faith as Catholicism is 3-D and you have to be able to defend the Church at all levels.

Cheryl Whisenand also joined Bill and Rich for a few minutes at the end of the show. Cheryl and her brother participated in the Bill Riley Talent Search 33 years ago. They performed a soft shoe, and even ended up on KRNT. Her brother went on to become an actor and she went on to major in music at Central. Last weekend during the Talent Search at the Newton Speedway, she accompanied a young singer on piano. Cheryl still remembers the acts immediately following and before she and her brother performed their soft shoe 33 years ago.

Today Matthew Bunson with Our Sunday Visitor brought up the interesting point that Episcopalians in North America are moving toward making a New Anglican Church with a more conservative taciturn. He pointed out a shift in the Anglican Church from England to Africa and Asia. With this we will begin to see the slow march of the Anglicans back to the Catholic Church.

Richard Lane a Catholic Evangelist and founder of Qorban Ministries joined Bill and Rich for their first interview. Richard shared with us his conversion to Catholicism today. He was raised Lutheran and told his mother once that he found that church boring. She told him that he "better go to somebody's church..." He found the Baptist Church after that and came alive in faith. When he joined the army the voice of his mother prompted him to look into the churches he was surrounded by. He found himself at home in the Catholic Church and after 19 years of being involved with them as a lector and a member of the choir (no one asked him if he was Catholic) he enetered the Church. His comment is that he was so in love with his faith that he had to marry his DRE. He's a 6 year old Catholic now and he still has the same fire.

On Pentacost Sunday, Richard Lane was preaching at a Baptist Megachurch. He enjoyed his fellowship with them and encouraging them to discover our common ground in Christ. Through Christ we find the Way, the Truth and the Life.

He also challenged our listeners to truly discover their faith. To pick up our crosses every day and follow Christ. He also encouraged us not to get down in these economic times. "When the bank is closed, the Tabernacle is always open" We have a richness in the Sacraments and the rich prayers of the Church.

Ryan Flood, the Executive Director of Catholic World Mission shared with us some of Catholic World Mission's projects. Catholic World Mission started as an apostolate of teh Legionaries of Christ and is now it's own 5013C, or non-profit organization.

One of the programs they orchestrate is Helping Hands Missions, which has been going for 10 years. They send doctors to countries and peoples in need and they take a week to serve the people. In that week they serve the people medically, but also have teams who go door to door to evangelize as well as offer classes on Natural Family Planning. Evangelization is at the heart of everything Catholic World Mission does. When they go into other countries they always ask permission from the local Bishop and if things progress with that community and they're asked to remain they'll open up a school.

With the Schools Catholic Worl Mission has opened there are opportunities to sponsor a child. Sponsoring a child is a $65 a month commitment or a $650 a year commitment. With these funds the children are able to attend school Pre-K through 12th grade. They not only receive a proper Catholic Educatoin but also are intellectually formed as well. They have 31 schools in 9 different countries. With these children they have an 85% graduation rate and many wondeful sucess stories from these children.
