  3. Need to go to top ranked school for it to be worthwhile
  4. For those who are starting grad school later in life they believe that they are too old
The main thing Dr. Martin wanted his readers to keep in mind when considering a graduate school was to take time researching because it is all about you and your education.

People interested in purchasing Dr. Martin's book can go to his website www.gradschoolroadmap.com He also said that a good place to help one look for information about graduate schools was www.gradschools.com

Dale Ahlquist, President of the American Chesteron Society, joined Bill and Rich for their second interview. Dale explained that the American Cherston Society is working towards a revival of interest in the works of G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton was a early 20th Century author from England who traveled several times to America. His writing is prolific and diverse. He wrote about anything from fiction, poetry, plays, history, philosphy, thelogy, economy, and politics. He truly was a complete thinker, which makes him a great appologist for the Catholic Faith as Catholicism is 3-D and you have to be able to defend the Church at all levels.

The Chesterton Society is going to be having its Annual Chesterton Conference at Seattle Universty August 6-8. If you're interested in going you can go to: chesterton.org

There are also 2 Chesterton Societies in Iowa in Des Moines and Iowa City.

Featured Saint of the Day: St. John Fisher
Featured National Guest: Richard Lane, Catholic Evangelist, Qorban Ministries
Featured National Guest: Ryan Flood, Executive Director of Catholic World Mission
Featured Catholic News: Matthew Bunson, Our Sunday Visitor

Today Matthew Bunson with Our Sunday Visitor brought up the interesting point that Episcopalians in North America are moving toward making a New Anglican Church with a more conservative taciturn. He pointed out a shift in the Anglican Church from England to Africa and Asia. With this we will begin to see the slow march of the Anglicans back to the Catholic Church.

Richard Lane a Catholic Evangelist and founder of Qorban Ministries joined Bill and Rich for their first interview. Richard shared with us his conversion to Catholicism today. He was raised Lutheran and told his mother once that he found that church boring. She told him that he "better go to somebody's church..." He found the Baptist Church after that and came alive in faith. When he joined the army the voice of his mother prompted him to look into the churches he was surrounded by. He found himself at home in the Catholic Church and after 19 years of being involved with them as a lector and a member of the choir (no one asked him if he was Catholic) he enetered the Church. His comment is that he was so in love with his faith that he had to marry his DRE. He's a 6 year old Catholic now and he still has the same fire.

On Pentacost Sunday, Richard Lane was preaching at a Baptist Megachurch. He enjoyed his fellowship with them and encouraging them to discover our common ground in Christ. Through Christ we find the Way, the Truth and the Life.

He also challenged our listeners to truly discover their faith. To pick up our crosses every day and follow Christ. He also encouraged us not to get down in these economic times. "When the bank is closed, the Tabernacle is always open" We have a richness in the Sacraments and the rich prayers of the Church.

Find Richard Lane on line at: www.qorban.net

Ryan Flood, the Executive Director of Catholic World Mission shared with us some of Catholic World Mission's projects. Catholic World Mission started as an apostolate of teh Legionaries of Christ and is now it's own 5013C, or non-profit organization.

One of the programs they orchestrate is Helping Hands Missions, which has been going for 10 years. They send doctors to countries and peoples in need and they take a week to serve the people. In that week they serve the people medically, but also have teams who go door to door to evangelize as well as offer classes on Natural Family Planning. Evangelization is at the heart of everything Catholic World Mission does. When they go into other countries they always ask permission from the local Bishop and if things progress with that community and they're asked to remain they'll open up a school.

With the Schools Catholic Worl Mission has opened there are opportunities to sponsor a child. Sponsoring a child is a $65 a month commitment or a $650 a year commitment. With these funds the children are able to attend school Pre-K through 12th grade. They not only receive a proper Catholic Educatoin but also are intellectually formed as well. They have 31 schools in 9 different countries. With these children they have an 85% graduation rate and many wondeful sucess stories from these children.

Featured Saint of the Day: St. Thomas More
Featured Local Guest: Jeanne Wells, Catholic Tuition Organization
Featured Local Guest: Monica Langin, Emergence, Fashion Rebirth: a Benefit for the Ruth Harbor Home and Mark McDougal of Ruth Harbor
Featured Catholic News: Michael Voris, Real Catholic TV

Jeanne Wells with the Catholic Tuition Organization joined Bill and Rich for their first interview. The Catholic Tuition Organization of Des Moines has been around since 2006 when the 65% tax credit for individuals who donate to scholarships for tuition for private or home school families, was enacted. Now with the new availability for the tax credit to be awarded to corporations who donate, it becomes easier to donate to this great organization.

Jeanne explained that with the 11,000 students that they helped with scholarships for their schools it's better for the state to help with tax credits for those who donate than it is for them to fund each student to be in public school. Each student in public school costs $5,000 in state money. By aiding those who donate to the tuition organization with a Federal tax credit, they save paying $5 million dollars for these students to attend public school. Instead they're spending under a million for the tax credit.

If you want more information you can go to: www.ctodsmdiocese.org

Monica Langin joined Bill and Rich along with Mark McDougal to promote the Emergence Fashion Rebirth: a Benefit for the Ruth Harbor Home Fashion Show.

The Show is July 11
Des Moines Social Club
1408 Locust
Admission is $5 as general admission to the show
$25 for a front row seat to the fashion show and admittance to the social and silent auction after the event.
The doors open at 8pm the show is at 8:30pm and will go until 9:00pm when the social and silent auction will begin.
You can obtain tickets through: www.iowatickets.com or at the door of the event.

Monica explained how the idea for the fashion show occurred to her while she was out for a run. She thought it would be a good idea to create a fashion show to benefit an organization. When brainstorming for organizations she thought about doing something that focused on children or women. When the idea began forming and moving forward she then wanted to work with an outreach to women with an adoption focus.

Wanting somethign local she found Ruth Harbor and a great fit for her fashion show. For the Fashion Show she will be using styles from Vitae Design Collective which feature a 1940's pin-up motif with a new twist. They'll be focusing on the feminite skirts and blouse designs as well as using music that was trademarked in that era and then brought a new twist by contemporary performers. The title of the show reflects both the clothing designs of bringing old clothes new life as well as the mission of Ruth Harbor, to help each of the women they work with discover life with their infant. Emergence Fashion Rebirth: a Benefit for the Ruth Harbor Home.

Featured Saint of the Day: St. Romuald
Featured Local Guest: Carmine Boal, Outreach Development Coordinator of Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education
Featured Local Guest: Michael Manno, Lawyer St. Thomas Moore Law Center
Featured Catholic News: Ron Williams, Catholic Edition

Today is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today Ron Williams of Catholic Edition shared a story about Pope Benedict XVI. He told us the Pope declared this year to be a year celebrating priesthood.

For more information: go to www.catholicedition.com

Camine Boal, Outreach Developement Coordinator of the Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education joined Bill and Rich this morning for their first interview. Carmine explained to us what her organization is all about. Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education enables parents to make the choice for their child's education. They believe whether it is public, private or home schooled, if the family finds themselves to be financially burdened that they should have funding to support their children's education.

Carmine also shared with us that $3 millions of tax credits to private school tuition scholarships. The individual tax credit of 65% of the donation is still in effect and the corporation piece is a new addition. Carmine is excited on this development because it further enables the parents to make decisions on their child's education.

For more information: got to www.iowaace.org

Michael Manno a lawyer who works for the Thomas Moore Law Center joined Bill and Rich for the second interview. He discussed the Freedom of Choice Act. Michael said that FOCA is a bill that was on the radar that was taken off the table for this year. FOCA would virtually wipe the slate clean and demolish any pro-life legislation or ground that the pro-life movement has made. Through that it would take away the conscience clause for health care professionals, informed consent, and parental consent.

Though FOCA has been taken off the table this year Catholics need to be aware that it is being disseminated into different legislation. Catholics need to stay informed and active during the health care reform as well as keeping an eye on other legislation that FOCA could creep into.

Featured Saint of the Day: Venerable Matt Talbot
Featured Local Guest: Tyler Price,M3M
Featured National Guest: Steve Gardner, Gardner Family Foundation
Featured Catholic News: Michael Voris, Real Catholic TV

Michael Voris with Real Catholic TV joined the morning show team to head up our Catholic News Segment today. Michael will also be joining KWKY for its 2nd Annual Faith Matters Conference: Springtime of Evangelization this year, August 28-29. Register on-line today by going to www.kwky.com

Today, Michael brought to light that PBS decided in a board meeting yesterday to ban all religious programming. They will no longer be airing religious programming on any of their 356 stations around the country. That brings to light the question of whether, if someone had a program about Mohamad, they would air it or hold true to this ban of religious programming? PBS is funded by tax dollars and listener support. This ban against religious programming should prompt Christians to think twice before monetarily supporting PBS during its pledge drives.

Tyler Price came in to promote this month's Martyrs of the Third Millennium, or M.3.M. The chaplain this month will be Bishop Richard Pates. Bishop Pates will be giving a talk as well as exposing the Blessed Sacrament, hearing confessions, and offering a Benediction at the end. This monthly event takes place at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale and will be held this Sunday, June 21 from 7:30-9pm.

Tyler also enlightened our listeners as to why they chose the name "Martyrs of the Third Millennium." When Pope John Paul II started World Youth Day a Spanish Newspaper asked him why. He told them "I come to greet the Martyrs of the Third Millennium." This call from our Holy Father to young people urges us to look outside ourselves and dive deeper into spreading the gospel through the New Evangelization. M.3.M. the event, focuses on giving young people ages 18-30 an opportunity to grow roots in their faith that they might be able to "go out onto the streets like the first apostles and proclaim the gospel." (JPII)

Steve Gardner form the Gardner Family Foundation joined Bill and Rich with a very enlightening story. Three of his four children suffer from Eosinophilic Gastro Intestinal Disease, also known as EOS. Our white blood cells host something called Eosinophils, which aid the body in fighting off disease and bacteria. In his boys the Eosinophils attack food. His boys are on special diets and his son Josh gets his nutrition from a feeding tube.

When Josh was 12 months old, he suffered intense bout of vomiting and diarrhea each day. Steve and his wife struggled to discover why, since their son was eating well. It got to a point where the doctor told them that if they didn't discover the cause of Josh's symptoms then he would die. Lucky for them they discovered that he has EOS. In Josh's case, the Eosinophils attack all food. So Josh has a feeding tube where he gets his nutrients each day. There are different and varying forms of this disease and each of his children so far has been effected by it.

The Gardner Family Foundation strives to enter the public square on four critical issues:

1. Raising Awareness in the public square
2. Educating Pediatric GI Specialists and Pediatricians
3. Raising funds for Research, as they try to find new ways to treat this disease.
4. Raising funds for Family Relief, as the cost of such things as feeding tubes and the special formulas is costly.

Tom Chapman, Executive Director for the Iowa Catholic Conference joined Bill and Rich this morning. Tom had some exciting news to share regarding tax credit for those who donate money for Private School Tuition Scholarships. The individual tax credit of 65% of the donation is still in effect and the corporation piece is a new and exciting addition.

Joan W. Anderson, author of many inspiring books compiling stories of encounters with angels, joined Bill and Rich for the second interview. Some of the stories she shared with us today include:

There was a family who was trying to adopt and every attempt that they made fell through. Finally they were working with a young pregnant mother who was leaning towards adoption. During the time waiting for the baby, the mother began to show signs of wanting to keep her child.

The mother of this family brought it to prayer one Sunday and asked for a sign. She didn't know what to pray for, because while she desired to be the mother of this baby, she didn't want to go against God's will. After asking her guardian Angel what to pray for, she felt as though the mother carrying the baby was in need of prayers, because she had no one else to pray for her.

After praying, she felt peace with the situation and knew that God's will would be done. When she sat back down from the knealer she sat on a pacifier. 2 weeks later the baby was born and this woman became a mother.

The second story she told was of a small boy who had down sindrome and his mother. His mother was anxious about sending him to a new school. The change would be good for him, but she worried about him being alone. Every once in a while the boy would ask his mother to go to bed early because he wanted to "Talk to the Yellow Man." Having a small vocabulary, his mother often wondered about the yellow man. Finally they sat down with him and showed him different pictures from magazines and books to discover who the yellow man was. When they flipped to a picture of an angel, the boy said, "Yellow Man!" and the mother knew that it was God's way of showing her that her son would never be alone.

Featured Saint of the Day: St. John Francis Regis
Featured Local Guest: Morgan Streeter, Fatherhood Initiative
Featured National Guest: Julie Storr, Sioux City Council of Catholic Women
Featured Catholic News: Matthew Bunson, Our Sunday Visitor

Matthew Bunson with Our Sunday Visitor apprised us of news, we as Catholics need to be aware of. His first story was on John Henry Newman who is on the fast track to beatification. He is now accredited with the miraculous healing of Jack Sullivan of Massachusetts' spinal cord disorder. The miracle only waits on the Holy Father's signature but has made it through the Church's rigorous examination. The Church ascertains whether or not the healing is indeed miraculous and then conducts further studies with a board of medical doctors and theologeans.

Matthew also informed us that there are two different movements going on in the U.N. and the U.S. House of Representatives that we need to keep our eyes open to. The U.N. is getting closer to creating a Super Women's Agency, which at first glance seems like a fine endeavor. Looking deeper into what this agency would consist of you find a pro-abortion agenda. You also find a pro-abortion agenda hidden wihtin a bill that just passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Foreign Relations Authorization Act will mobilize $40 billion over 5 years and a major component of that money will go to advocating for reproductive health 'rights' to unrestricted abortion for all. Along with the obvious objections to these pro-abortion movements, Matthew also brought up the consideration, that with so many other health issues that women around the world are having, to focus on providing them abortion, which is a procedure that does not enhance a woman's health, seems a frivolous use of money.

Morgan Streeter with the Fatherhood Initiative through the YMCA joined us as well. The Fatherhood Initiative is part of the Fathers and Families Coalition. It addresses teh growing need to get fathers involved with their kids.

Kids without the influence of their father in their lives are more likely to drop out of school, abuse drugs and alcohol, and other such tendencies. At this point 80% of the people in prison did not have their fathers in their lives.

Morgan drew an important analogy in that fathers are supposed to look to St. Joseph, the father of Jesus and truly learn to serve their wives and children. So often fathers fall into the misconception that being the leader of the family means that they hold all the power. They do hold the power in the family, but it is in service of the family, to discover and enact what is best for the family as a whole, uplifting it and its members to God.

Julie Storr joined us to promote the Sioux City Diocese's Council of Catholic Women's conference to be held in August. The conference will be held in Fort Dodge and focus on God's view of the role of women in society.

Today many young women find their value in the things of the world. They also fall prey to the misconception that their worth as a women is derived from things that fade. This Conference will help them discover anew the gift of their Authentic Fenininity through a look at Salvation History and the women in the Bible with Gina Bauer.

Featured Saint of the Day: Servant of God, Orlando Catannii
Featured National Guest: Fr. Don Calloway MIC, Vocations Director for the Marian House of Studies in Steubenville, Ohio and Author of "The Virgin Mary and Theology of the Body"
Featured National Guest: Brian Kissinger, Youth Minister in DC Area: Youth Ministry 101
Featured Local Guest: Mark McDougal, Director of Ruth Harbor
Featured Catholic News: Michael Voris, Real Catholic TV

Fr. Don Calloway, Priest of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception and Vocations Director for the Marian House of Studies in Steubenville, Ohio joined Bill and Rich this morning. Fr. Don explained that the Marians of teh Immaculate Conception are a religious community that was founded in Poland. Their mission is to spread devotion to teh Mother of Jesus as well as to assist parish priests in whatever they need. As the Vocations Director for their house in Steubenville, he helps young men who are discerning the Marians discover whether they can fulfill the obligations of living in community with the Marians of the Immaculate Conception.

When speaking of teh Immaculate Conception, Fr. Don said that a majority of protestants do not believe in the Immaculate Conception. They believe that Mary was born in sin and committed personal sin during her life. Fr. Don points out the biblical basis for the Church's teachings on the Immacculate Conception as firstly coming from the mouth of Gabriel who had a message from God. Gabriel said "Hail full of Grace" in greeting to Our Lady. When you look at the text in its original language you discover that Gabriel is saying of Mary "Hail, you who have been from the very beginning and will always be full of grace" This begs the question, who is it that interprets Scripture? In the Catholic Church, we have the Magisterium of the Church or the Teaching Body of the Church to show us the way.

Fr. Don also spoke of the Rosary as prayin gthe scriptures. By meditating on the mysteries of the life of our Lord you discover with each Hail Mary a new gratitude that he would come to save us. Entrusting our Meditation through Our Lady she is able to draw us deeper into the mysteries. For who knows Jesus better than his mother? Mary, who walked with Jesus and contemplated the mysteries of his life in her heart will shed a brighter light on what it means to entrust ourselves to her Son.

For more information on the Marians of the Immaculate Conception visit: www.marian.org

Brian Kissinger, the Youth Minister for Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in the DC area joined Bill and Rich for another installment of Youth Ministry 101. Today Brian spoke about Youth Ministry's ultimate goal as being to build and promote vocations, whether that be to married or religious life.

Teens these days live in a culture that is fast paced and full of distractions. To mobilize these young people in their faith, you have to meet them where they are and invite them into something deeper. When you do this you'll discover that most kids are looking for something counter-cultural. They're looking for something bigger then themselves.

In this culture, kids are exposed to a lot of technology and background noise. Brian touched on the importance for kids to be encouraged by their families to go on retreats and unplug. It is important for them to know what it's like to have moments of silence. Through leading his own retreats as a youth minister on a parish level where he ministers to about 30-40 kids at a time to regional conferences where his words touch up to 2,500 kids, Brian spoke of the importance of unplugging. He mentioned that with the loud music kids like, if they show up to a retreat with an ipod or cell phone, chances are that he'll find it.

A web-site the Brian likes to check out to help in his faith is: www.impactcenter.com

Mark McDougal the Director for the Ruth Harbor home spoke with Bill and Rich as well. Ruth Harbor is a home for young women who are chosing to give life to their unborn babies but might not be welcome at their homes because of their valiant decision. Mark informed us that the name Ruth Harbor is rooted in the name Ruth in the bible that means "Compassion" and then Harbor giving a safe haven.

Ruth Harbor is a local program and began with 3 women who saw a need in the community. They developed a board, God provided the money and in 2001 Ruth Harbor opened its doors on 46th and ingersol to young women.

Ruth Harbor allows these young women to come away from the noise of their lives so that they can be more fully prepared to make decisions. As they carry their child to term they discover whether their called to parent the child themselves or if they are called to make teh couragious decision of love and choose adoption.

Featured Catholic News: Ron Williams, Catholic Edition

Jon Leonetti, the co-founder and walker of the Souly Walking Project was recently in Iowa. Jon is now in Illinois and shared some stories from the road. Souly Walking is a project geared toward evangelizing the young people of America. Through reaching out to them through the radical means of walking across America, speaking with them and encouraging them: Jon and his co-walker Jesse Weiler hope to awaken the Youth to their call.

Chris Padgett, a musician and youth evangelist joined Bill and Rich for the second interview. Something that Chris brought to light about youth ministry is that even for a travelling speaker, you deal with real people who experience real brokenness. He spoke of the supreme gift it has been for him to travel and experience so many different people in all the different walks of life.

He recently returned from a trip to Canada where he spoke to 20,000 young people in 9 days. Bob Rice, Associate Professor of Catechetics and Youth Evangelist, who will be joining KWKY for the Faith Matters Conference spoke with Bill and Rich this morning. Right now, Bob is gearing up with his band to begin Summer Conference Season at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

As an Associate Professor of Catechetics, Bob shared with us what the study of Catechetics entails. The word Catechetics come from a Greek word meaning "Pass Down." At Franciscan University, the Catechetics department forms young people to pass on the faith. John Paul II went further saying that intimacy with Jesus is focused on the whole person. With the Catechetics department, young people are mobilized to serve the faith of young people.

He's excited to be joining us at the Faith Matters Conference, below is one of his favorite songs of his vast repetoire of compositions, it's called "I Shall Be Healed."

Congratulations to the Winners of today's tickets to the Catholic Charities' I-Cubs Game: Jim Wilwerding and Ross Hulne
Featured National Guest: Dr. Owen Phelps, author of "The Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus"
Featured Catholic News: Michael Voris, Real Catholic TV

Dr. Owen Phelps, the author of "The Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus" joined Bill and Rich on the morning show today. "The Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus" is a book which takes Ken Blanchard's book "Leading Like Jesus" and puts a Catholic twist into it. Dr. Phelps shared with us his experiences with Ken Blanchard.

Dr. Phelps met Ken when he was a young journalist. He covered an event where the speaker was Ken Blanchard who had just come out with his now best-selling book "One Minute Manager." Dr. Phelp's immediate thoughts were that it was a book that was designed for people who don't have a lot of time to read. He bought a copy and had Ken sign it.

Later after achieving his PhD, Dr. Phelps desired to help teach Ken's leadership model where leadership is cut up like a steak into little pieces that people can digest in portions. Through this he was able to meet with Ken's co-author, Phil Hodges which lead to a great friendship. Through leading workshops on Leading like Jesus, Dr. Phelps discovered that as a Catholic the words could go deeper, stretching into the sacraments, devotional life of the Church and the writings of the Saints.

Dr. Phelps then spoke with Ken and the two of them began to work together, hammering out intellectual property rights and helping each other grow into a deeper understanding of Leading like Jesus. Through this endeavor they discovered that the S of Servant that was focused on in Ken's work was only the beginning. Servant bled into Stewardship which also pointed to Shepherd, and the Three S-s of "The Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus" was born.

Dr. Phelps spoke about Jesus' resurrection and his encounter with his disciples. As the perfect leader, Jesus has prepped his disciples throughout his ministry to accept the call to go into the streets and evangelize. His appearance in the upper room and the decent of the Holy Spirit gave the Apostles the confidence to become selfless leaders.

Through the way of the carpenter: novice, journeyman, master, then teacher-we discover the facets of leadership. This is a model parents can take into their families as they watch their children grow into the men and women, passing through the stages of life. Dr. Phelps pointed out that through this method, the truth and messages parents wish to impart are never lost, but the approach is altered to fit their stage in life.
